U.S. public data sources and Census datasets

A source catalog that distinguishes maintained observations from documentation and proposed integrations.

Integrated original Census products

The ACS community collection is partially integrated: selected 2020–2024 five-year detailed tables, definitions, original cells and compatible national/state/county coverage. Its selected methods and arithmetic have been validated for this release; the entire ACS is not maintained here.

The Population Estimates Program collection is partially integrated: annual resident population from Vintage 2025 for 2020–2025. Original national/state and county CSVs, annual series and control totals are retained. Component-of-change and specialist migration products are outside this collection.

Source candidates with distinct methods

HUD housing needs and homelessness: CHAS and homelessness documentation; no local observations. CDC PLACES: modeled snapshots with strict interpretation limits; no ingestion. Education institutions: NCES, Scorecard and NCSES candidates; identifier and cohort validation required.

Environment and energy: EPA and EIA documentation reviewed; NOAA/FEMA connectors unvalidated. Government finance: Census, Treasury and USAspending candidates; fiscal/accounting and geographic attribution review required. Specialist sources: justice, food, healthcare, work, transport, broadband, veterans, civics and immigration; individual access and rights validation required.

What a status means

Documented candidate means the producer and potential product have been identified, not that an endpoint has been executed. Access validated means retrieval has worked. Sample ingested means observations have been retained. Method validated means schema, universe, transformations and limits have been checked. Production approved means a specific version has passed publication review. Temporarily unavailable and retired describe source lifecycle states.

A dataset page separately states fully integrated, partially integrated or catalog-only. An original producer link does not become a locally maintained dataset. The initial Census collection has retained source artifacts and validated methods; other records are catalog-only, with access limits described.

Rights, attribution and availability

Original government publication does not guarantee completeness, causal validity or every possible redistribution right. Display, storage, modified data, CSV/API redistribution, embeds and AI processing require separate consideration. Original Census government statistics generally are not copyrighted in the United States; competitor text, map tiles and third-party files are not copied.

Source manifests preserve acquisition dates and original-file checksums. This release is a dated snapshot rather than a live source-health monitor. If a linked resource becomes unavailable, the frozen observations remain identifiable and the next review records the change. Report a broken producer link through the contact page.
