Census population estimates, 2020–2025: state and county data
National, state and county annual July 1 resident population estimates for 2020–2025, retained from a single Census Vintage 2025 release.
Partially integrated · selected concepts and source-supported geographies
A single population vintage
The Population Estimates Program estimates residents at their usual residence. This collection uses the national/state NST-EST2025-ALLDATA file and the co-est2025-alldata county file. Each year’s POPESTIMATE field is retained without interpolation.
National and state estimates were released January 27, 2026; county estimates were released March 26, 2026. Both cover July 1 dates from 2020 through 2025 in Vintage 2025. Acquisition and website publication occurred September 30, 2026. Earlier values may differ from earlier vintages because an updated source can revise its history.
Geographies and controls
National totals exclude Puerto Rico and other territories. The 50 states and DC reconcile to the national total for each year. Covered county totals reconcile to their state estimates. Exact source county IDs match the ACS directory; a match does not erase differences in dates, methods or geographic vintage.
County equivalents, including Connecticut planning regions, retain their own identifiers. These counts do not represent cities, ZCTAs, school districts or service areas. No city counts or population projections are supplied by this collection.
Schema, uncertainty and reuse
History files include the entity identifier, code, name, type, annual reference date, people as the unit, estimate value, original source variable, producer URL, source publication date, Vintage 2025 and frozen website release. Profile JSON includes the entire annual series.
PEP does not publish sampling margins of error with these annual population estimates. We do not invent confidence intervals. Census estimates are separate from decennial counts and ACS survey population totals; they must not be spliced into an unlabeled series. Original government statistics retain producer attribution and their original geographic definitions.
Update method
A new PEP vintage is reviewed as a complete historical series, not merely an appended annual row. Exact IDs, duplicates, annual totals and geographic changes are checked. Publishing a new release keeps the prior frozen snapshot available so saved reports remain reproducible.
The initial website release is apd-2026-09-30-r1. The source manifest records original URLs and SHA256. Both original CSV files are retained with the dataset, while page templates read cached normalized observations. Government APIs are not called on each visit.
