Census data coverage: places, topics and periods
The exact subjects, areas, periods and research actions supported by the first publication release.
The integrated launch boundary
The initial collection has 29 indicator concepts across six hubs: People and Households; Income and Work; Housing; Health and Coverage; Education; Environment and Infrastructure. It includes one national profile, all 50 states plus DC, and 3,144 ACS counties or county equivalents. National totals exclude Puerto Rico and other territories.
Annual population observations cover July 1, 2020–2025 in PEP Vintage 2025. Other numeric observations use the 2020–2024 ACS five-year period. Health numeric coverage is insurance. Education coverage is adult attainment and resident enrollment. Environment/infrastructure numeric coverage is subscriptions, vehicle availability and resident commuting; pollution, water and energy observations are not integrated.
Supported research actions
Find a definition or dated answer, inspect static profiles, compare two to five compatible geographic areas, select an annual population year, download exactly the visible selection, save a chart as SVG and cite a frozen snapshot. Original selected source cells and direct margins of error are available. No account or persistent server-side research workspace is required by these pages.
Derived percentage uncertainty is not calculated. Statistical rank assurance, significance tests, subgroup filters, ACS historical trends, custom regions and arbitrary polygons are not supported. A five-year estimate should not acquire a trend arrow from an overlapping period or be relabeled a current annual observation.
Geographic boundaries and omissions
Counties include Census county equivalents. Connecticut uses planning regions; other equivalents include parishes, independent cities, boroughs and census areas. A county is not a city, ZCTA, school district or service boundary. DC is explicitly a federal district, although it appears alongside state records for comparison.
Puerto Rico, other territories, tribal areas, cities, metros, neighborhoods and congressional districts need separate source and boundary validation. Institution profiles require verified education or provider identifiers. Missing city statistics are never filled with county averages under a city label.
Long-term subject taxonomy
The planned broader publication includes people and communities; income and living standards; work and businesses; housing and homelessness; health outcomes; insurance and facilities; education; public finance and services; justice; environment and hazards; energy and water; food and agriculture; transportation and connectivity; immigration, veterans and civics; science and research.
Only the qualified launch concepts are numeric here. Candidate pages explain sources and restrictions without publishing unvalidated observations. The proposed 60–80-concept broad release is a later expansion, not a fulfilled count claim. Institutions, specialist administrative data, maps, report workspaces and developer services follow their own validation and rights review.
How to interpret missingness
A measured zero, unavailable estimate, source sentinel and not-applicable observation are different. Raw values remain inspectable. A source without reporting coverage does not supply zero crime, clean air or a universal safety guarantee. Percentages with no valid denominator remain unavailable.
Use the source catalog to determine whether a product is integrated, partially integrated or catalog-only. Use the methods record for the rules governing comparison and uncertainty.
