Housing costs and household income by state
Compare gross rent, household income and renter cost burden with the same ACS period.
Rent burden adds the missing income context
In the United States during 2020–2024, 51.1% of cash-rent households with computable ratios spent at least 30% of household income on gross rent. The median gross rent was $1,413 per month, while median household income was $80,734 in 2024 dollars.
These measures describe different universes. Median rent covers renter households paying cash rent; median household income covers all households. Their ratio is not the rent burden of a typical renter. The burden indicator instead uses a source table that measures rent relative to each household’s income.

Reproduction and limits
Join B25064, B19013 and B25070 by exact ACS geographic identifier from the same 2024 five-year release. Rent burden is 100 × (B25070_007E + B25070_008E + B25070_009E + B25070_010E) / (B25070_001E − B25070_011E). The not-computed group is excluded. Use the displayed source denominator rather than the count of every renter household.
This report makes a descriptive comparison. It does not identify causes, measure policy effectiveness or establish that a particular household has the median income and median rent. Derived burden uncertainty is not calculated, so the table should not be read as a statistically established rank.
